PM Modi meets Armenian counterpart on sidelines of SCO summit

Bishkek: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek on Sunday, with the two leaders discussing ways to expand bilateral cooperation across key sectors.

The talks covered defence, trade and investment, IT, space, education, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure and tourism. Modi said India-Armenia cooperation was poised to grow further in areas including defence, IT, space, education and pharmaceuticals.

Defence has emerged as an important area of cooperation between the two countries in recent years. Armenia has procured India’s Pinaka multiple rocket launcher system, Akash air defence system, Swathi weapon-locating radar, ATAGS artillery systems and anti-drone systems.

The two leaders discussed expanding defence cooperation as well as strengthening trade and investment ties between the countries.

Pashinyan also invited Modi to visit Armenia during the meeting.

“India-Armenia cooperation is all set to grow in defence, IT, space, education, pharmaceuticals and more,” Modi said in a post following the meeting, adding that both sides were committed to deepening trade and investment linkages.
