New Delhi: Veteran BJP leader L K Advani entered his 100th year on November 8, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi recalling his contributions to Indian politics, public life and the growth of the BJP.

In a message marking the occasion, Modi praised Advani for building the party’s ideological foundation around the principle of “Nation First” and mentoring generations of party workers. He also highlighted his role in transforming the BJP into a major national political force.

Born in Karachi on November 8, 1927, Advani moved to India following Partition. He joined the RSS at 14 and later played a significant role in the growth of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and the BJP, founded in 1980.

Advani was a prominent voice against the Emergency imposed in 1975. In 1990, he led the Ram Rath Yatra from Somnath to Ayodhya. He served as Union home minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government and as deputy prime minister from 2002 to 2004. He was conferred the Bharat Ratna in 2024.

Today, 8th November, is a landmark day. Respected L.K. Advani Ji enters his hundredth year. On this special occasion, my greetings to him.

I’ve written an article in which I’ve highlighted his everlasting contribution to India.

I have recalled his journey, be it experiencing the horrors of Partition and rebuilding life from scratch, strengthening the Jana Sangh and building the BJP, standing up for democracy during the Emergency, leading the Somnath to Ayodhya Rath Yatra or serving the nation in government.

Have also written about other aspects of Advani Ji – the voracious reader, his love for culture and cinema, a prolific writer and more.

The prime minister wished Advani good health and said his life and contributions would continue to inspire future generations.
