Asian Games: Nethra Kumanan wins bronze in women’s dinghy sailing

Nagoya: India’s Nethra Kumanan clinched the bronze medal in the women’s dinghy event at the Asian Games sailing competition on Friday, adding to the country’s medal tally.

The 29-year-old Olympian from Chennai accumulated 14 points, including seven from the final and seven from the qualification races, to finish third in the competition. Thailand’s Sophia Montgomery won gold with five points, while Singapore’s Jania Ang secured silver with 13 points.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Kumanan on her achievement, describing it as a significant accomplishment for India. In a post on X, the Prime Minister wished her continued success and expressed hope that she would inspire a new generation of athletes.

India’s Vishnu Saravanan narrowly missed a podium finish in the men’s competition, securing fourth place.

Other Indian sailors, including Manu Francis, Kurisinkal Noble, Harshita Tomar and Shital Verma, also contributed to the country’s performance, winning silver and bronze medals in other sailing events.

Kumanan’s bronze adds to India’s presence in sailing at the continental event and highlights the contribution of the country’s sailors across multiple categories.
