Bengaluru: Participation in sports is essential for maintaining physical fitness and mental well-being, particularly among young people, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said, emphasising that good health also contributes to better academic performance.

He was speaking after inaugurating the third day of the CM Cup-2026, an inter-college cricket tournament organised by the State Youth Congress Committee in the Mahalakshmi Layout Assembly constituency. Reddy formally inaugurated the event by batting on the field.

Commending the State Youth Congress Committee for engaging young people in sports alongside its social initiatives, the minister urged students to make physical activity a part of their daily routine to build fitness and mental resilience.

“Participation matters more than winning or losing,” he said, highlighting the role of sports in developing discipline, self-confidence and team spirit among youngsters. He also called for similar sporting events to be organised in every district to provide opportunities for emerging talent.

A total of 32 college teams are participating in the tournament. The final is scheduled to be held on October 4, with the winning team set to receive a cash prize of ₹2 lakh and the runners-up ₹1 lakh.

Individual awards, including Man of the Match, Player of the Series and Best Bowler, will also be presented to recognise outstanding performances during the competition.

State Youth Congress Committee president H.S. Manjunatha Gowda, former BBMP member S. Keshavamurthy, MEI president S. Manohar and Block Congress Committee president Parisara Ramakrishna were among those present at the event.
