India to Add 500GW Non-Fossil Energy Capacity in Next 10-11 Years: PM Modi
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, asserting that clean energy would be central to India’s future energy security and economic resilience.
Addressing industry leaders, investors and innovators, Modi said India’s sustained investment in renewable energy over the past decade had helped it withstand global disruptions, including the West Asia crisis.
He said India had achieved more than 50% non-fossil fuel-based installed power capacity in 2025, five years ahead of its Paris climate commitment. With nearly 300GW of non-fossil capacity already in place, the country aims to add another 500GW over the next 10-11 years.

Highlighting the PM Surya Ghar scheme, Modi said more than 65 lakh households had adopted rooftop solar. He urged startups, IITs and entrepreneurs to develop innovative solar solutions capable of meeting most household energy needs, including cooking and electric vehicle charging.
He also called for expanding solar power in agriculture, dairy and public infrastructure, and strengthening transmission networks to support the clean energy transition.
