OSLO: Navanethem “Navi” Pillay, a South African jurist of Indian Tamil origin and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced the award on Friday, October 9, recognising Pillay’s decades-long contribution to strengthening international justice, protecting human rights and upholding the rule of law.

Born in Durban, South Africa, in 1941, Pillay built a distinguished legal career during and after the apartheid era. She represented anti-apartheid activists and fought against racial discrimination, emerging as a prominent advocate for equality and justice.

Landmark Role in International Justice

Pillay served as a judge and later president of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda. Her work contributed to landmark developments in international criminal law, particularly the recognition of sexual violence as a possible component of genocide and a crime against humanity.

Her judicial career also included service at the International Criminal Court. Through her work, she helped strengthen international efforts to hold individuals accountable for serious human rights violations and crimes committed during conflicts.

Former UN Human Rights Chief

From 2008 to 2014, Pillay served as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. During her tenure, she advocated the protection of civilians in conflict zones and called for accountability for human rights abuses.

Her career has spanned national courts, international tribunals and the United Nations, making her a prominent figure in the development of international human rights law.

Trump Misses Out Again

US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly expressed his desire to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and cited his diplomatic initiatives and efforts to resolve international conflicts, was not selected for the 2026 award.

The Nobel Peace Prize is presented annually by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo. The 2026 award recognises Pillay’s work in promoting peace and international law, highlighting the role of legal institutions in protecting human dignity and ensuring accountability.
