St George’s Park: South Africa bounced back from their first-Test defeat to beat Australia by an innings and 31 runs in the second Test, levelling the series 1-1.

Batting first, South Africa piled up 425 runs, led by captain Temba Bavuma’s outstanding 179 and Marco Jansen’s valuable 85. Australia struggled in reply, managing just 99 runs in their first innings.

Forced to follow on, Australia showed greater resistance in their second innings, with Travis Head scoring 121. However, the visitors were eventually dismissed for 295, falling short by an innings and 31 runs.

Jansen starred with the ball as well, claiming five wickets for 33 runs. Kagiso Rabada took four wickets, while Wiaan Mulder and Simon Harmer contributed three and two wickets respectively, further denting Australia’s batting effort.

The defeat came despite Head’s century, which was reported as the first occasion on which Australia had lost a match featuring a hundred from him. South Africa’s comprehensive victory has brought the series level and set up a contest for the remaining Test.
