Sudan gold mine collapse kills 11, over 30 injured

Khartoum: At least 11 workers were killed and more than 30 injured after a tunnel at an unauthorised gold mine collapsed in Sudan’s Red Sea State, officials said.

The collapse occurred late Saturday in the Oni area, with rescue teams recovering 11 bodies from the debris by Sunday. Officials from the Sudan Mineral Resources Company said around 30 workers had been rescued, while search and rescue operations continued amid fears that more people could still be trapped.

The incident is the second deadly collapse at an unauthorised gold mine in Sudan within a week, highlighting continuing concerns over safety standards at informal mining sites.

Last week, at least 82 people were killed in another gold mine collapse in western Sudan. Informal and unauthorised mining operations are widespread in the country, where inadequate safety measures have contributed to repeated mining accidents.

Authorities are continuing rescue and recovery operations at the latest site while efforts are underway to determine the circumstances that led to the tunnel collapse.
