Centre Notifies Social Security Board for Gig, Platform and Unorganised Workers
New Delhi: The Union labour ministry has notified the constitution of the National Social Security Board for Unorganised Workers and Gig and Platform Workers, paving the way for a broader social security framework for millions of informal-sector workers.
The board, established under the Code on Social Security, will be chaired by the Union labour and employment minister. It will include representatives from the Centre and state governments, aggregator companies, employers, civil society organisations, workers’ unions and gig and platform worker associations.
The board will recommend welfare schemes for different categories of workers, advise the Centre on social security matters and monitor the implementation of government welfare programmes.

It will also review state-level record-keeping systems and expenditure from the relevant social security funds and accounts.
According to the notification, the board will meet at least three times a year and function according to procedures prescribed by the central government.
The move is aimed at extending institutional welfare support to gig and platform workers, including those engaged through digital platforms, alongside traditional unorganised-sector workers.
