NEW DELHI: Union Home Minister Amit Shah has set an ambitious target of making India completely drug-free by December 31, 2029, calling on state police forces to work together to eliminate drug trafficking networks across the country.

Speaking at the Police Commemoration Day event at the National Police Memorial in New Delhi, Shah paid tribute to police personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty. He urged law enforcement agencies across states to intensify their efforts against the drug menace.

Describing narcotics as a major threat to India’s economy and development, Shah said the Union Home Ministry was working on a strategy to eliminate the problem within the stipulated deadline. He emphasised the need for coordinated action and a united approach by police forces to achieve the target.

The Home Minister also highlighted improvements in India’s internal security situation, referring to the challenges posed by terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, unrest in the northeastern states and Left-wing extremism in Maoist-affected regions over the past three decades.

He said peace agreements and the sustained efforts of security personnel had contributed to improved stability in these regions. Shah also praised the dedication and sacrifices of security forces in the ongoing efforts to eliminate Naxalism.

Acknowledging the contribution of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and state police personnel, Shah said their courage, commitment and sacrifices had played a crucial role in strengthening India’s internal security.

He expressed gratitude to personnel who continue to safeguard the country, stating that their service had helped India stand strong on the global stage.
