Netanyahu praises Indian pilot’s bravery, invites him to light Israel’s Independence Day torch

New Delhi: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has praised Indian pilot Captain Smith Machhar for his bravery in thwarting an attempted attack during a flight and invited him, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to light the ceremonial torch at Israel’s upcoming Independence Day celebrations.

Netanyahu spoke to Captain Machhar over the phone on Sunday, commending his courage and describing him as a leader whose actions have inspired people beyond India and Israel.

“Captain, I would like to invite you and my dear friend Prime Minister Narendra Modi to light the ceremonial torch on our next Independence Day. You are not only a true leader of the brave people of India and Israel but a leader of the entire world,” Netanyahu said.

The Israeli prime minister also wished Captain Machhar a speedy and full recovery.

The invitation is considered a special honour, as the ceremonial torch-lighting is usually reserved exclusively for Israeli citizens. Netanyahu said the decision to invite the Indian pilot was a recognition of his courage and bravery.

The gesture highlights Israel’s appreciation of Captain Machhar’s actions and the recognition of his bravery at the international level.
