Asian Games: Tajinderpal Singh Toor wins silver, extends medal streak to three editions

Aichi-Nagoya: India’s Tajinderpal Singh Toor continued his impressive run at the Asian Games, winning silver in the men’s shot put at Aichi-Nagoya 2026 and securing a medal at his third consecutive edition of the continental event.

The 31-year-old opened his campaign with a throw of 20.06 metres before improving to 20.26m with his second attempt. The effort earned him the silver medal, although it ended his bid for a third successive Asian Games gold.

Iran’s Mohammadreza Tayebi claimed the gold medal with a throw of 20.81m, setting a new Asian Games record.

Tayebi’s effort surpassed Toor’s previous Games record of 20.75m, which the Indian had produced while winning gold at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games.

Toor successfully defended his title at the 2022 Hangzhou Games, winning gold with a best throw of 20.36m. He had entered the Aichi-Nagoya competition aiming to complete a hat-trick of Asian Games gold medals.

Despite missing out on the top spot, Toor’s silver means he has now won medals at three successive Asian Games.

Toor also holds the Indian national record in the men’s shot put with a throw of 21.77m, achieved in Bhubaneswar in June 2023.

President, PM congratulate Toor

The President congratulated Toor on winning his third consecutive Asian Games medal, praising his powerful throws and consistency at the continental level.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the athlete. In a message shared on X, Modi praised Toor’s focus and determination, noting that the latest Asian Games medal adds to his distinguished career.

The Prime Minister wished Toor continued success in his future competitions.
